Creation

Potion and poisons are a result of mixing solvents (potions) or oils (poisons) with reagents that add various properties to the created substance.
To create a mixture you need at least two reagents that share a common effect. For example Columbine and Corn Flower both share “Restore Health” effect and mixed together will result in a tincture that restores health. Each reagent has four different properties to be discovered via experimentation. Fortunately enough the possible effects list is not long so chances of actually making a discovery is high.

The solvent tier used is responsible for the level requirement (and the strength) of the potion. Crafting potions will grant you alchemy inspiration that will unlock more and more alchemy related traits including Solvent Proficiency that unlocks higher grade potions. Improving your alchemy even further unlocks Laboratory Use perk that allows you to mix three reagents to craft your potions vastly increasing the variety of potions you can craft.

Elder Scrolls Online - Reagents

Currently there are 26 alchemy reagents spread all around Tamriel. Most of them are gatherable plants and herbs but some require you to kill certain type of enemy (for example Beetle Scuttle drops from thunderbugs and shalks)

Elder Scrolls Online - Solvents

Each potion requires a solvent, which is nothing more but a vial of purified water. High grade solvents require additional ranks in Solvent Proficiency perk. The grade of solvent adjust to the zone level. You can find them in:

  • Pure water spots - look for a small whirlpools in bodies of water, those are harvestable for water
  • Water Skins - small leather sacks found in buildings and around crates and barrels
  • Bottles: Small bottles found commonly inside buildings and on shelves. Apart from yielding solvent you can also loot consumable beverages from them

Oils and Poisons

Just as potions require solvents, poisons require oils. The scaling is pretty much the same and requires Solvent Proficiency to enhance the tiers of the poisons. But while solvents can be found commonly in the world oils are found in combat and drop commonly in dungeons. Alternatively you can drop them from from undead and daedra.

Leveling up:

  • Your first focus should be unlocking all four traits on the reagents first. You will earn extra amount of inspiration each time you discover a reagent property.
  • Invest points in Solvent Proficiency first, higher grade potions grant more inspiration experience
  • When leveling alchemy use only two reagents, even with three unlocked, as there is no difference in inspiration gain
  • It may be best to not use certain reagents during the leveling process and you will need them for best quality potions later on so safe your Columbines, Mountain Flowers and Namira’s Rot!
  • When going for a supply run turn off grass in the settings, this will make harvesting herbs so much easier!
